This section explores where, when and how oral language development occurs and its importance in supporting quick and efficient reading. The section also talks about what to do when children come from a language-poor background and why the belief that teachers can make a difference to those children is a crucial, but neglected, starting point. It stresses the importance of early identification and intervention for children who have oral language delays and introduces the concept of dyslexia and other developmental disorders that act as barriers to literacy.
